Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) is a potent herbal resin, widely used in traditional Ayurvedic preparations. Guggulu is a Sanskrit word, which literally means, “Protects from disease”. Guggulu has the unique ability to deliver herbs deep into the tissues, at the same time getting rid of accumulated toxins. Due to this unique property, it is used in many Ayurvedic polyherbal formulations to treat many diseases, particularly chronic diseases. The various Guggulu formulations are as follows:

Gokshuradi Guggulu: It is used to support the proper functioning of the genitourinary tract, besides strengthening and toning the kidneys, bladder, and urethra as well as the reproductive organs. It is also used as antilithiatic agent to dissolve kidney stones, and also as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic (painkiller).

It contains Gokshura fruit (Tribulus terrestris), Guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul), Musta root (Cyperus rotundus), Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), Pippali fruit (Piper longum), Ginger root (Zingiber officinale) and Black Pepper fruit (Piper nigrum).

Kaishore Guggulu: It is a powerful detoxifying and rejuvenating preparation that has a special use in the musculoskeletal system, and is used for nourishing and strengthening the musculoskeletal system, supporting the overall health and proper function of the joints and muscles. It is useful in treatment of gout and arthritis.

It contains Guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul), Guduchi stem (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), Ginger root (Zingiber officinale), Pippali fruit (Piper longum), Black Pepper fruit (Piper nigrum), Danti root (Baliospermum montanum) and Nishoth root (Operculina turpethum).

Kanchanar Guggulu: It is commonly used to support the healthy function of the Thyroid and to cleanse the lymphatic system. It is useful in treatment of PCOD, anovulation, amenorrhoea, hypothyroid, goitre, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), fibroids, cysts and early stage tumours.

It contains Guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul), Kanchanar bark (Bauhinia variegata), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Ginger root (Zingiber officinale), Black Pepper fruit (Piper nigrum), Pippali fruit (Piper longum), Varuna bark (Crataeva nurvala), Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum), Cardamom seed (Elettaria cardamomum) and Tamalpatra leaf (Cinnamomum tamala).

Lakshadi Guggulu: It is used mainly in management of low bone mineral density, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and other diseases related to bones, teeth, joints and muscles – as the main actions of this formulation are restoring bone mass, strengthening bones, joints and muscles, reducing joint inflammation and alleviating pain and swelling associated with joint diseases.

It contains, Guggulu, Laksha (Laccifer lacca), Hadjod (Cissus quadrangularis), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Nagabala (Grewia populifolia)

Mahayograj Guggulu: It is used for providing relief from arthritis, gout, rheumatism or debilitating effects of paralysis. It is also used in treatment of digestive diseases, respiratory troubles, urinary disorders and all types of pain disorders and inflammatory diseases.

It contains Suddha Guggulu, Triphala Powder, Dried ginger (Zingiber officinale), Pipali (long pepper or piper longum), Pipali (long pepper or piper longum), Chavya (Piper cubeba), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Hingu or Heeng (Asafoetida), Ajmod (Apium Graveolens) celery seeds             , Mustard seeds               , Black Cumin, White cumin, Nirgundi seeds, Inderjo (Holarrhena Antidysenterica )seeds, Patha (Cissampelos Pareira)             , Vidanga (Embelia ribes), Gajpipal (Java Long Pepper), Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa), Atees or Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum), Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum), Vacha (acorus calamus), Mustak (Cyperus rotundus), Castor Oil (Erand Oil); and minerals and bhasma such as Rajat Bhasma (Vang Bhasma                , Naga Bhasma, Loha Bhasma, Abhrak Bhasma and Mandur bhasma.

Medohar Guggulu: It is used for the treatment of obesity. Besides helping in burning off extra body fat, it also Improves digestive functions, and is effective in rheumatic and respiratory disorders.

It contains Shunti (Zingiber officinale), Maricha (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Musta (Cyperus rotendus), Chitrakamoola – Plumbago zeylanica and Guggulu.

Navaka Guggulu: It is used for reducing the cholesterol level in the body naturally, especially triglycerides. It is also used in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, fatty liver and to prevent complications due to hypercholesterolemia (elevated lipid levels). It is also known to stimulate fat metabolism,and hence reduce body fat.

It contains Guggulu, Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum               ), Dried Ginger Root (Zingiber Officinale), Pippali (Pepper Longum), Nagarmotha (Cyperus Rotundus), Chitrak Root (Plumbago Zeylanica), Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula), Bibhitaki (Terminalia Bellirica), Indian Gooseberry ( Emblica Officinalis), Vaividang (Embelia Ribes) and Cow’s Ghee.

Punarnavadi Guggulu: It is known for its powerful detoxifying and rejuvenating effect on the kidneys, heart, and joints; and is used for supporting the urinary, circulatory, and musculoskeletal systems. It is also useful in treating gout, sciatica, low back ache, spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and such other skeleto-muscular and joint disorders.

It contains Guggulu, Ginger root (Zingiber officinale), Punarnava root (Boerhaavia diffusa), Castor root and oil (Ricinus communis), Nishoth stem (Operculina turpethum), Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Pippali fruit (Piper longum), Black Pepper fruit (Piper nigrum), Chitrak root (Plumbago zeylanica), Bhallataka herb (Semecarpus anacardium), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), Guduchi stem (Tinospora cordifolia) and Danti root (Baliospermum montanum).

Simhanad Guggulu: It is another detoxifying and rejuvenating formulation which combines the potent cleansing ingredients of castor oil and triphala, removing toxins from the joints, blood and GI tract. It has been found useful in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, hyperuricemia & gout, cough & bronchitis, constipation and intestinal gas and skin diseases – mainly itching with pain.

It contains Castor oil (Ricinus communis), Guggulu resin (Commiphora mukul), Gandak, Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula).

Trayodashang Guggulu: It is known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, muscle relaxant properties and also for providing relief in neuralgic pain. It is used in treatment of cervical spondylitis, sciatica, stiffness of the knee, bone marrow disorder & bone fracture, inflammation of ligaments, abscess, osteoarthritis and gout.

It consists of Guggul (Commiphora Mukul), Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera), Babool Stem Bark and Seed Pods, Hauber (Juniperus Communis), Saunf (Foeniculum Vulgare), Shatavari (Asparagus Racemosus), Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia), Gokhru (Tribulus Terrestris), Nishoth Kala (Operculina Turpethum), Rasna (Pluchea Lanceolate), Ajwain (Trachyspermum Ammi ), Kachur (Curcuma Zedoaria), Ginger (Zingiber Officinale ) and Cow’s Ghee.

Triphala Guggulu: It is a unique preparation which combines the detoxifying and rejuvenating actions of triphala with the deeply penetrating and cleansing actions of guggulu. It is used mainly to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and to support proper weight management

It contains Guggulu, Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia belerica), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), and Pippali fruit (Piper longum).

Yograj Guggulu: It is used for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis & osteo-arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, splenomegaly, early stage abdominal tumours, and neurological disorders such as paralysis, hemiplegia, neuropathy, etc.

It contains contains Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Long Pepper fruit and root (Piper longum), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia bellerica), Celery seed (Apium graveolens), Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), Black Pepper fruit (Piper nigrum), Cardamom seed (Elettaria cardamomum), Javanese Long Pepper fruit (Piper retrofractum), Chitrak root (Plumbago zeylanica), Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum), Coriander seed (Coriandrum sativum), Cumin seed (Cuminum cyminum), Deodara bark (Cedrus deodara), Ginger root (Zingiber officinale), Gokshura fruit (Tribulus terrestris), Haritaki fruit (Terminalia chebula), Musta root (Cyperus rotundus), Pluchea root (Pluchea lanceolata), rock salt, Vidanga fruit (Embelia ribes), Talisa leaf (Abies webbiana), Tamala bark (Cinnamomum tamala), Vetiver root (Vetivaria zizanoides), Barley ash (Hordeum vulgare) and Ajowan seed (Trachyspermum ammi).

    I don’t know very much about ayurvedic healthcare methods but from what I do know, I believe it is very effective.
